Yamas and Niyamas are foundational to yogic thought and are part of a way of living. In yoga philosophy they are the first two limbs of the eight limb path. They are guidelines, ethical disciplines or restraints and observances. There are 10 Yamas and Niyamas, the first five are Yamas which translates to "restraints". They are nonviolence, truthfulness, nonstealing, nonexcess and nonpossessiveness. The Niyamas are "observances" and include purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study and surrender. Each week I will add an in depth description of each starting with the Yama nonviolence or Ahimsa as well as points for further thought or discussion. Enjoy digging deeper into these cornerstones of yoga philosophy with me! #myyogalife #kivaellisonyogi #yogaliving
